A Cabin Bag Packed for a Landing After Midnight

A late landing turns the cabin bag into the only luggage that counts. The checked case may take forty minutes to appear, or may not appear at all, and the things needed in the first two hours after landing should never be in it. This post is a packing list for a traveller who has arranged a session near the runway for the night of arrival, built around the order in which those hours unfold.

For the aircraft

A charged power bank and the right cable come first. The phone carries the thread, the hotel confirmation and the boarding pass for the onward flight if there is one, and a phone that dies over the sea leaves a late arrival guessing. Next, a water bottle to fill after security, because cabin air dries skin and throat over a long flight. Earplugs and an eye mask help with sleep in the air, which is worth trying for even on a flight that lands at midnight.

For the terminal

Passport and any arrival documents in a pocket that closes, not buried in the bag. A light jacket, because the wind across the flat land around the airport is cool at night in every season. A small amount of euro for a taxi or a vending machine, though cards are accepted nearly everywhere, including the taxi rank. And something to eat, bought at the departure airport or on the arrivals level, in case the hotel kitchen has closed.

For the first half hour in the room

Toothbrush, toothpaste and a small bottle of whatever you use to wash, so that the shower before the session does not depend on the case. A clean T-shirt and underwear. Deodorant. A comb. If you wear contact lenses, their case and solution, because nobody wants to lie face down for an hour with lenses that have been in for sixteen hours. These items weigh very little and turn the first half hour in the room from a search into a routine.

For the session itself

Nothing, in practice. She brings her own towels and oils and takes them away again afterwards. What she needs from you is a clean body, a warm room, a clear bed or floor and a few minutes at the start to talk through what the session will include and where her limits are. For afterwards

A sleep mask if the hotel curtains let in the light from the runway lights or the car park. Something to eat and water, set on the desk before she arrives. A charger plugged in next to the bed so the alarm works in the morning. And the thought that tomorrow's plans can start late: there is nothing in Amsterdam that cannot wait until eleven.

The case that does not arrive

Lost luggage is more common on late arrivals, especially with a tight connection somewhere earlier in the journey. If the case is missing, the desk in the baggage hall will take details, and on a busy night that can take half an hour or more. Update the thread as soon as you know. Once the checked case is in the room, resist the temptation to unpack it that night. Open it only for what the morning needs, a change of clothes and the charger for anything that ran flat, and leave the rest zipped. A floor covered in half-unpacked belongings makes the room feel smaller and the session less restful, and none of it will be needed before breakfast. Unpacking belongs to the next day, when there is light and time and a clearer head.

A short version of the list

Power bank. Water bottle. Passport in reach. Jacket. Something to eat. Toothbrush and wash things. Clean T-shirt and underwear. Contact lens case. Eye mask. That is the whole list, and it fits in the outer pocket of an ordinary cabin bag.

The rest is arranged before you board: the start, the journey time, and half the fee confirmed in advance, as it is for every room near the airport. After that, the only thing left to carry is yourself.
