Summer Thunderstorms and the Late Inbound Flight

Summer storms over western Europe push evening flights into the small hours. What that means for a session arranged near Schiphol, and how to keep it intact.

July and August bring a particular kind of evening to the airports of western Europe. The afternoon is hot and heavy, a line of storms builds in the west, and by seven the departure boards across the continent begin to turn orange. Flights due into Schiphol at ten land at midnight, and flights due at midnight land at two. Travellers who have arranged a session for the night of arrival find themselves rearranging it from a departure gate somewhere else.

Why storms cause cascades

A thunderstorm over one busy airport slows everything that depends on it. Departures are held on the ground, arrivals circle or divert, and aircraft end up in the wrong place for their next flight. The delays grow through the evening, and the last flights of the day take the brunt of it. A late inbound on a stormy summer evening is quite likely to become a very late inbound.

What to do at the gate

The moment the departure board shows a delay, update the thread with the new estimate. Do not wait to see whether it improves. While she has not set out, the start can move to follow the new landing, and the journey time can be agreed again if the hour changes significantly. Keep the updates short: flight, new estimated departure, new estimated landing.

When to give up on tonight

There is a point beyond which a session on the night of arrival no longer makes sense. A traveller landing at two, reaching the room at three and needing to be up at eight is better served by going straight to bed. In that case, moving the booking to the following evening is usually the right call. Moved with more than twenty-four hours to go and to a date within fourteen days, the first move is free, and the deposit carries across intact. Moved inside the final twenty-four hours, it follows the notice scale, as the cancellation policy explains in euro.

Storms and force majeure

A delayed flight feels like something outside your control, and in a sense it is. For the purposes of a booking, though, an airline changing its timetable is treated as a change on the traveller's side, not as force majeure. What counts as force majeure is narrower: a shutdown of transport, a serious disruption in the city, an official instruction that makes her journey impossible. In those cases the deposit becomes credit. A storm that closes the motorway to the airport might qualify; a storm that delays your flight does not.

Diversions

Occasionally a flight bound for Schiphol is diverted to another airport altogether, and passengers are bussed in or put up elsewhere for the night. If that happens, tell the thread as soon as you know. The session cannot follow you outside Amsterdam and the airport area, so the booking will need to move to another date or be cancelled on the notice scale.

The room waiting for you

If the session does go ahead late, the preparation matters even more. Tell the night desk you are expecting a visitor, drop the case, shower quickly and dim the lights. A traveller who has spent three extra hours in a departure lounge is more tired than one who arrived on time, and an hour is usually the right length. The delayed landing page goes into more detail.

A word on the second evening

Travellers who move a booking to the next evening after a storm often say the second evening was the better one. The body has slept, the room is familiar, and the anxiety of a delayed flight has faded. If you move the booking, keep the same thread going, so the details already agreed carry over and only the new start needs to be fixed.

Figures do not change

An hour carries the same fee whether it starts at eleven or at two. Half is confirmed in advance for any room at the airport, and the rest is settled at the door.

The constant

Storm or no storm, the session belongs to your therapist to shape. She says what it includes and where her limits are before it begins, and she may decline or close a visit at any point.

So on a stormy summer evening, keep the thread updated from the gate, and be ready to move the booking to tomorrow if tonight runs out of hours. The second evening is often the calmer one anyway.
